Cary Mathis

Cary graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in pastoral ministries, psychology, and liberal arts from Greenville College in Illinois in May of 1996. While in college, he served at Methodist camps in Michigan during the summer. After graduating from Greenville he started at Asbury Theological Seminary in August 1996. While in Seminary he served a United Methodist Church north of Cincinnati Ohio as a Youth/Associate Pastor. In 1998, he resigned his position and moved to Montana to be a cowboy. Six months later he was serving in the beautiful Flathead Valley of Northwest Montana serving in Lutheran (ELCA) churches as a youth and children’s ministry coordinator. In 2004 he was offered a youth ministry position at a large Lutheran congregation in Colorado Springs, where he met his future wife Laura. He soon got married and entered graduate school to be an elementary schoolteacher. In October, 2006 he started serving at Ascension Episcopal in Pueblo CO. as Director of Youth Ministries.

Laura was offered a job as the Senior Accountant at the Denver Fire Department, and they moved to Denver. In October, 2007 he resigned his position at Ascension in Pueblo and was offered the position as Youth and Children’s Ministries Coordinator here at the Church of the Ascension. In May, 2008 he graduated from his teacher education program at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, and will also receive his master’s degree in curriculum and instruction in August, 2008.

In Cary has held local, diocesan, and national leadership positions in youth ministry. Currently he serves on the Diocese of Colorado Faith Formation Task Force for Quest and Genesis youth weekends.
